The St Vincent de Paul Society is an international, lay Christian organisation, Catholic in character and origin. Our mission is to bear witness to Christ’s love and to put his teaching into practice following the example of its founder, Blessed Frederic Osanam, and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
The work of the Society’s members is characterised by:
- Offering support and friendship
- Promoting self-sufficiency
- Striving for social justice
- Knowing no boundaries
There are over 600,000 members world wide in 132 countries.
St. Michael & St. John’s Conference was founded nearly 60 years ago. It has been active ever since, undertaking a range of work in the Parish. At present we have 20 active members. Visiting those in need and sitting side by side with them remain the core work of the Society. Loneliness, especially among the elderly, is increasing so members spend a lot of time visiting housebound people to prevent a feeling of isolation. We visit the elderly, housebound, bereaved, those in residential homes and hospitals and single parent families.. 150 people are seen on a regular basis. We give financial support to families in need and support our local food bank.
Members meet weekly to pray together and to review activities.
A short meeting is held each Tuesday at 7pm in the Presbytery.
Confidentiality is of paramount importance and all members are C.R.B. checked.
The Societies income is derived mainly from:
- The contributions of members
- Quarterly parish collections
- Donations or legacies
The Parish Conference is presently linked with a parish in India which we regularly support. We also provide funding for special projects such as provision of water, goats and cows for families, sewing machines and cooking utensils. We recently sent money to the Sudan for the baby feeding project and to India for cots. We have recently committed to training a nurse over a 3 year period and a doctor over 5 years in India.
